The 2022 Midterms

Our Five State Strategy

This fall, we’re at risk of losing our Congressional majorities and ceding full control of states where voting rights, reproductive rights, and access to healthcare are at stake. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that the work of winning key races and building governing power is not a one-and-done endeavor. We must continue to engage voters and ensure that everyone has a voice in the political process.

We’re doing everything in our power to ensure we make the greatest possible impact on the 2022 election. That involves narrowing our focus so that our volunteer energy can be channeled to the races that most need our help. For that reason, we’ll be running a five state strategy, zeroing on elections in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin

Why those five states? All of them have a critical Senate and Governor’s race on the ballot this year. If we can manage victories in these five states, we’d expand our Senate majority so that we can end the filibuster and make real legislative change, and ensure Democratic oversight of abortion and gun laws along with future attempts at election interference. And the real kicker? All five are states we won in 2020! So we’re not working from a deficit—we simply need to sustain the gains we made last cycle.

In each of these states, we’ll look to target smaller, down-ballot races that most need our support. That way we’re multiplying our impact—providing a huge lift to House and State Legislative campaigns while boosting Senate and Governor candidates statewide.

Why Midterms Matter

Midterm elections always see lower rates of voter turnout than presidential years— Senate, House, and state level candidates struggle to generate the same level of enthusiasm without the big name draw at the top of the ticket. But these elections are no less important. The 2022 midterms will not only decide who is passing bills and confirming judges in Congress, but will determine the balance of power in every state’s government. If we don’t win, we’ll struggle to advance any of our policy priorities and our grip on democracy could slip.
The good news? Lower turnout elections mean that Knock for Democracy’s volunteer efforts can have an even greater proportional impact. Every call made and door knocked is more likely to drive someone to the polls who may not have voted otherwise. So if there was ever a time to get involved and feel confident that your voice is making a difference, this is the moment.

2022 & You

When we come together to do this work, we can have a remarkable impact. And that’s what makes volunteering with Knock for Democracy so special—everything we do, we do as a community. Whether it’s hundreds of us on a Zoom making calls into Georgia or dozens driving to knock on doors in Pennsylvania, the difference we can make collectively is greater than what we could ever accomplish on our own. And in 2022, thousands of us will join together to have important conversations with voters in the states and districts we must win if we hope to keep our country on the right track.
Join us and you’ll see just how empowering (and fun!) volunteering with Knock for Democracy can be. We’re excited to have you.
